College students enjoy week with Scottish Fire and Rescue
Uniformed Services students at Ayrshire College recently completed an intense one-week training exercise with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service at Kilmarnock Community Fire Station.
Friends and family of the students were invited into the fire station for a presentation ceremony and a display – involving hose running, trauma techniques, and road accident procedures – putting into practices the skills learnt during the course.
Uniformed Services is a course at Ayrshire College that prepares students for a rewarding career within the emergency services. The College has built mutually beneficial relationships with the police, fire, and ambulances services, as well as the Army, Navy and RAF, to provide valuable experiences to the students alongside their theory work.
This latest programme with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Services tested the students’ core skills in communication, problem solving, team building and confidence. The students were issued with certificates of achievement and praised by the Kilmarnock fire team for their hard work in difficult weather conditions.
Elizabeth Smith, Uniformed Services lecturer at Ayrshire College, said: “Developing these crucial links within our community is a priority for Ayrshire College. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the week, gaining valuable insights and hands-on experience that will undoubtedly contribute to their future success.
“We’d like to thank the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for their support, and we look forward to building on this work by continuing to provide our students with further opportunities that prepare them for rewarding careers in the emergency services."
