IPSE hosts Scotland's first ever 'Freelancing for Students' event at Ayrshire College

In partnership with Bridge 2 BusinessIPSE - the not for profit association representing freelancers and the self-employed - launched an exclusive event at Ayrshire College.

Based at the newly developed Kilmarnock Campus, the event gave students across all disciplines top tips and advice on how to successfully launch a career as a freelancer.

On Wednesday 23 January, students heard from guest speakers who shared their personal account of a typical 'Day in the Life of a Freelancer.'

Comedian Chris Henry spoke to the students via video from his world tour, where he is currently gigging in Australia. He covered all the key tasks that you need to maintain when self-employed in true entertainment style, through a comical video message.

IPSE, who currently have over 68,000 members, hosted a workshop on 'Overcoming Challenges' as part of a series of practical workshops on the day. Students also heard from guest speakers; including Lucy Thomson of Coach Lucy and Jack Allan, Founder of 95 Social.

Lucy Thomson, graduate of Ayrshire College, shared her journey with freelance work and the benefits of her learning during that time, which allowed her to develop her own business.

Jack Allan of 95 Social gave a fantastic talk on how to 'articulate your connection to a brand' and gave some great tips on how to utilise LinkedIn as an effective networking platform.

Ayrshire College students Ann McGiffen (Visual Communication), Scott Haddow (Sound Production), Mark Lynch (Photography) and Sharlene Atkinson (Make-up Artistry) all formed a discussion panel to share their own personal experiences with freelance work. This resulted in a positive and engaging discussion forum with the student audience and productive advice was shared whilst networking.

Networking was one of the buzzwords of the day, and this further resonated during a workshop on 'Top Tips for Effective Networking' which gave further insight into the opportunities to connect with potential employers.
