#LoveScotlandsColleges: Scottish Apprentice of the Year 2018, Fraser Wallace

November 30, 2020 - Martin Currie

Ayrshire College is supporting the launch of the #LoveScotlandsColleges national campaign to highlight the importance and strength of Scotland’s colleges.

Students are at the heart of everything colleges do. Here is a profile on one of our award-winning students, Fraser Wallace, who started an Engineering foundation apprenticeship with us before joining GE Caledonian to complete his Mechanical Engineering modern apprenticeship with us.

Fraser was named the Foundation Apprentice of the Year and Scottish Apprentice of the Year at the 2018 Scottish Apprenticeship Awards.

He said: "It felt amazing to have won these awards. Being nationally recognised for my achievements in the course and with GE Caledonian was incredible.

"While I was at school, I completed my Foundation Apprenticeship. I liked being in the College workshop and practising what we were learning throughout the course.

"I enjoyed doing the practical work. It’s a great feeling knowing that you are trusted to practise a task independently. It’s a different style of teaching at college, you are treated more like an adult. It’s nice to have a feeling of independence. I really liked the course content as well, it was very interesting.

"It was very exciting to get the opportunity for work experience with an employer and gain hands-on experience. This led to me being offered a job when I left school.

"Engineering is a massive sector and has something for everyone. There will always be a need and demand for engineers, and this appealed to me.

"The whole experience has been amazing!”
