Joinery students shown around new housing development

Students from Ayrshire College have been given a guided tour of Taylor Wimpey’s latest housing development in Kilmarnock at Walker’s Grove.

The student group are all studying towards a City & Guilds Diploma in Bench Joinery, and the site of around 140 homes was perfect for them to see at this time in their course.

The visit was arranged by the students’ college lecturer to complement the Principles of Building Construction Information and Communication unit that they’re studying. The Taylor Wimpey team were very accommodating of the students, with the site manager personally walking them around the site.

With the houses at all different stages, from foundations to completions, the students were able to gain a greater understanding of the work that is involved in a new build development.

Now the students are keen to put what they have learnt into practice.

Ewan Farrow, lecturer at Ayrshire College, said of the trip: “I felt that at this stage of the course and in particular the current unit they are studying, this was a perfect time for them to see first-hand all the stages of the build, and link it to what they have been learning in class.

“It’s also good to build strong links with local companies and where possible experience new innovative methods of current build process.”
