Hopefully potential employers will see this award as evidence that I’m committed to the task at hand

John Lees-Gardiner, HND Accounting

After leaving school, I worked in our small family business of roofing and building for eight years.

I started at college on an NC Business and Administration course because I wanted to learn more about the business side of being self-employed. However, I found I enjoyed the accounting side more than the business side, so continued onto HNC Accounting and now HND Accounting.

I’m surprised and flattered to have won this award – I just worked hard on the course. Hopefully potential employers will see this award as evidence that I’m committed to the task at hand.

It had been a while since I’d done any kind of course work. I didn’t know if I’d be able to keep up with the students who had started college straight after school. It turns out I didn’t need to worry!

I enjoyed my time at Ayrshire College. The lecturers are helpful, and the lessons were challenging but not too difficult. The course improved my budgeting analysis and spreadsheet skills.

The bulk of the course was on published company financial statements; preparing a company’s accounts to be published according to the accounting standard. Other topics included specialised transactions for contracts, variance analyses, auditing, budgets and business tax.

I have a clear idea of what I want for my future. I hope to become a self-employed accountant, after gaining some experience working for an accounting company.
