Building better communities!
Just before classes stopped we caught up with HNC Working with Communities to find out why they chose the course, what they’ve been doing and what their hopes are for the future. Here’s what they had to say…
The course involves two days at college and a work placement. It covers all aspects of community learning and development - working with individuals and groups, highlighting areas in which they need support and empowering them to strive for better.
Many of us had concerns about coming to college - finances, childcare, age, learning difficulties, etc. Some were dealing with other issues - physical disabilities and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. The college was very supportive!

"This course will give you a new perspective on life and society. I’m less judgemental as I’ve learned that life experiences can shape people differently.
I was interested in the subjects covered in the course – it related to my own personal struggles in life, as well as the struggles of some of my friends.
Discussing theories with classmates gave me different outlooks and made me consider situations that I wouldn’t normally think of.
I enjoyed my placement – working with young adults has given me first-hand experience. I’ve gained communication and presentation skills and become more confident.
The College is a good place to study and to grow as a person."

"I have a passion for working with young people similar to me and this course will help me to get the job I want.
I enjoy taking part in open minded discussions - sharing knowledge and experience with others in the class without fearing judgement.
I’ve really developed my writing and communication skills, and the work placement helped put theory into practice to better understand what we covered in class."

"I’ve discovered that learning is good at any age.
I enjoy the interaction in the ‘actual’ community, seeing how you can help others. I’ve learned to self-reflect and be more patient, and now have a new way of looking at society.
This course will open doors that I thought were unobtainable to me."
Sarah
"After volunteering I wanted to work in communities and make a positive change! I was a little concerned about not knowing anyone, but it was part of trying something new.
I really enjoyed group tasks and I’ve learned too many skills to mention, plus I’m now much more independent."
Elizabeth
"I was a bit embarrassed about starting again at 46, but I’ve managed to turn my previous experience and skills into employment.
If you actually want to make a difference - come on board. The College is welcoming and the staff are supportive and encouraging. I’ve loved my time here. I feel more complete and of value."
Carmen
"Before coming to college, as well as being a first time mum, I volunteered in a Community Centre. I’m passionate about my community and wanted to progress academically.
I had some back to college nerves and concerns about whether I could achieve at HNC level but I really developed my knowledge and my confidence.
The College is pleasant, up-beat and fresh. It’s been great meeting new people, many with the same passion as me.
I enjoyed learning about addiction and working with people in recovery. Now having qualifications and added experience will give me an advantage."
