The Inside Information - Level 5 Hairdressing

Is this your first time at College Gemma?
This is my first time at this college but I’m a trained nurse so I have been at university before. I’ve come back as a mature student.
Ok, so, tell me about why you decided to change career?
I gave up nursing because my son was born disabled so I have been looking after him for the last 8 years. He was given a liver transplant last year so it has made his health a bit better. Nursing and hairdressing were my two choices at school, nursing won the first time round so hairdressing won this time.
So, what do you see yourself doing in the next few years?
I’m definitely going to come back and do level 6 but the real reason I’m here is because I want to volunteer around hospices and hospitals.
We were in hospital for quite a length of time, about three months. If someone had tapped me on the shoulder during that time and said “come and get a blow-dry” or “we’ll do something with your hair to cheer you up a bit” then I would have loved it. So, that’s what I want to do with my qualifications when I get them.”
So you’re thinking about the parents and carers of the patients?
Well, either or, but mostly parents or carers.
Wow, that’s really nice of you. To take something that’s happened to you and turn into something so positive is really lovely. So, tell me, what are you enjoying most about this course?
I’m enjoying everything. It feels like this is exactly what I should be doing. I look forward to coming to college. I hate it when were off college so I’m really enjoying it.
What kind of things do you do on your level five hairdressing?
We are doing a lot of blow drying and conditioning treatments at the moment, cutting and colouring.
Is this something you have done before?
No. I hadn’t even had a hairdryer in my hands properly before I started college. I’m a total novice.
You look really comfortable in the classroom. It doesn’t look to me wake it something that you just started.
But it is. I never had a pair of scissors in my hand until about four weeks ago and now I’m looking for someone to come in so I can cut their hair all one length and I’m confident that I can go do it.
Is this a course you would recommend to other people who are interested in hair?
100%. Definitely.
So, if someone is out there thinking about it, then you would say…
Just go for it. 100%.
