Health and Social Care

This course gives you a great introduction to what you'll need to know to work in a care practice setting. The focus is understanding the people that use care services and developing your skills to support the health and wellbeing of others.

For this course you'll need:

• a real interest in working with people
• an interview with us during which we may ask you to speak in a small group. If you would find speaking in a small group difficult please mention it in the personal statement section of the application form

If you don't have formal qualifications, but have life experience, then we’ll also consider you for a place, so please call us for a chat.

This course covers a range of subjects including:

• health and social care provision: examine the health sector in Scotland and what’s involved in working in the care sector
• basic health awareness: learn about the main body systems and how to take basic health measurements like pulse and blood pressure
• human development and behaviour: understand the needs of people using care services
• social influences: look at how social factors impact people and expore how to improve the life chances of those using care services
• working safely: with the emphasis on the spread of infection and how to control it
• personal development: building confidence, self reliance and interpersonal skills through a range of projects

You’ll also build transferable, essential skills such as communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others and problem solving to help you become more effective in life, learning and work.

Throughout the course you’ll hear from a range of guest speakers including people from the health board and local care services.

On completion of this course you may:

• progress to a Level 5 course
• move into a care job

• there's a high demand for care staff and plenty of jobs
• you'll learn practical skills
• you have the opportunity to step up to Level 5 courses
