Entry Requirements
To apply for this course, you must have a genuine interest in media and be able to discuss your interests and aspirations.
Your application would also benefit from four National 5s or equivalent qualifications OR a relevant course at SCQF Level 5, such as Access to Film and Broadcasting If you don’t have formal qualifications but have life experience, then we’ll also consider you for a place, so please do apply.
Successful applicants will be invited to bring along a sample of their work to an interview with us, for discussion and a further sample of your written work, like research into a job role in the industry should be prepared, but we’ll send more details when we have your application.
Course Content
In this course you’ll work to high standards and deadlines, often within a team.
Here’s just some of what you may be doing:
- explore creating media content, from planning and research, through to production. You’ll look in detail at existing media content, analysing how people and events are represented and examining it for signs of discrimination or bias.
- analyse films from a range of genres and explore the film industry.
- develop skills in scriptwriting, learning to format scripts for film, TV and radio.
- study media photography, looking at the key areas of fashion, sport and reportage, then taking your own photographs.
- look at advertising, including how ad agencies operate. You’ll analyse professional ads in video, radio and print format, and work in a team to produce your own ad.
And like all our media students, you may have the chance to:
- Take part in live projects.
- Be involved in the Annual End of Year Show which features work from all creative departments.
- Take part in our Film Festival where we screen the best short films from the year.
Careers and Further Study
Upon successful completion of this course, you may have the opportunity to:
- progress to HNC Media Analysis and Production
- begin your career with an apprenticeship in a media organisation, such as the BBC
- explore various career options, including Writer, Researcher, Broadcast Journalist, Editorial Assistant, TV/Radio/Film Producer, and Video Content Producer
With additional qualifications, you may have the opportunity to consider pursuing a degree programme in TV, Radio and Podcast Production, Filmmaking and Screenwriting at UWS or explore media courses at universities like Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian, Stirling, Queen Margaret, or Edinburgh Napier.
