Entry Requirements
We’re looking for you to have a:
- a real interest in Science
- a minimum of one Higher at Grade C or above, ideally in Biology, Human Biology or Chemistry
- alternatively, a science related NC course at SCQF Level 6, a Foundation Apprenticeship in Scientific Technologies or equivalent
Mathematics at National 5 or intermediate 2 level is also beneficial.
No formal qualifications? Don't worry! We may consider life experience or relevant training.

Course Content
You’ll learn biology and chemistry, but with the underpinning practical skills required to be a successful and employable scientist - be prepared to spend plenty of time in the lab conducting experiments and processing your results!
Our comprehensive curriculum includes:
- laboratory skills
- human physiology
- microbiology
- fundamental chemistry and biochemistry
- cell biology
- DNA and genetics
- statistics/mathematics
This course not only makes you an Ayrshire College student but also enrols you as a University of Glasgow student, with sessions held at the University throughout the HNC year.
Next Steps and Career Opportunities
Upon successful completion of this course, you may:
- progress to the second year of various Life Sciences degree programs at the University of Glasgow
- pursue further studies at Ayrshire College, transitioning to HND Biomedical Science (SCQF 8)
- move on to a related degree at other universities
- begin your career, securing a technical level post in the NHS or similar fields

Widening Participation Programme
To be eligible, applicants must not previously have completed an undergraduate degree, and must meet at least one of the following eligibility criteria:
- progress from Level 6 Science course at Ayrshire College
- be Scottish domiciled, residing within a target postcode area (SIMD, deciles 1-4)
- be care-experienced
- be estranged and living without family support
- have caring responsibilities
- have Asylum/Refugee Status (you need to be eligible for funding)
