Overview
This course is your pathway to a dynamic career as a Graphic Designer or Illustrator. If you have a passion for art and design, this course is tailored to nurture your talent and help you to excel in today's competitive job market.
Entry Requirements
To apply for this course, you’ll need:
- a genuine interest in art and design
- one Higher qualification, preferably in Art and Design, with English at National 5 or above. Alternatively, a relevant NC course at SCQF Level 6 or equivalent, such as Art and Design
- an interview with us
- a portfolio showcasing your artistic work
If you don’t have formal qualifications, but have appropriate experience or training, then we’ll also consider you for a place, so please do apply.
Course Content
This course includes a wide range of subjects including:
- graphic design: interpret briefs, create concepts and produce finished design solutions
- illustration: develop your drawing, design, and media skills, with projects like children's book and stylised illustration
- animation: design and animate characters and visuals using stop motion and motion graphics
- photography: master the art of photography, covering composition, lighting and Photoshop
- web design: learn to plan, design and build websites
- magazine design: create designs, layouts, and finished publications using industry standard software like Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop
- printmaking: produce professional-quality print using plates, stencils or screens
- art and design context: explore the evolution of art and design from the Renaissance Period to Pop Art and the present day
You'll also have exciting opportunities to:
- work on live briefs for local businesses, community projects or events
- participate in national competitions
- collaborate with local artists, such as a digital art projects
- showcase your work in exhibitions, including external venues like McLaurin Art Gallery or local design studios
- engage in the Creative Department's Annual End of Year Show
- potentially secure work experience placements
Careers and Further Study
On completion of this course you may:
- progress to HND Visual Communication
- explore career options such as Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Animator, Printmaker, Photographer, Production Designer, Web Designer or Social Media Designer
With additional qualifications, you may even have the opportunity to pursue a degree programme, such as BA Digital Art at UWS or a degree course at esteemed institutions like Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art, Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee, Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen, Edinburgh Napier University or Perth College.
