Overview
If you'd like to work in a sport or exercise, for example in an athlete support capacity, this is the course for you. It covers all the key aspects of sports and exercise science, including Physiology, Sport Psychology, Nutrition and Mechanics.
The course would suit learners with a keen interest in sport, exercise and physical activity who perhaps have strengths in these areas but who also wish to investigate the factors that sit behind strong sporting performance.
Learners will investigate how the body and brain reacts to physical challenges and learn how to best prepare participants for exercise.
An HND takes 2 years to complete.
Entry Requirements
To join this exciting programme, you'll need:
- Genuine enthusiasm for sport and fitness
- Two Graded Highers (A-C) OR successful completion of a relevant NC course at SCQF Level 6
- An interview with us
- Membership in the PVG scheme
If you don't have formal qualifications but possess relevant life experience, we encourage you to apply as you may be considers for a place on the course.
Course Content
In this course, you may:
- Gain hands-on experience in fitness suites and facilities
- Learn more about sport psychology and mechanics
- Learn the nuances of exercise physiology and anatomy
- Explore the psychology of exercise and supporting clients
- Look at optimising performance through biomechanics
- Develop skills in planning, teaching and evaluating gym-based exercise sessions
Careers and Further Study
Seeking to start your career. On completion of your HND, you will be ideally placed for direct entry into the workforce, meeting the CIMSPA professional standards for Gym Instructors. Alternatively, with an excellent track record of HND graduates accessing year 3 university places, you can transition to a degree-level course, opening doors to roles like Primary/Secondary Teaching (following further postgraduate study). Possible roles after HND completion include Fitness Testing Support, Athlete Support, Active Schools Co-ordinator, Sport/Health Promotion Roles, Gym Instructor, Gym/Fitness Suite Management.
