- HND Applied Sports and Exercise Science (Year 1) OR
HNC Fitness, Health and Exercise:
- An interview with us
- To become a member of the PVG scheme
Course Content
There’s a substantial amount of theory and written elements, so you’ll need to be motivated and willing to carry out a lot of independent study and research.
You’ll have the chance to:
- go on a work experience placement and provide real life, sport science support. Placements will be with a key sport/education provider, such as rugby and football clubs.
- learn top tips for success from people who work in the industry eg Glasgow School of Sport, Strength and Conditioning experts.
You’ll also be encouraged to extend your industry work and volunteering outwith college, to maximise your chances of networking and employment.
Here’s just some of what you’ll be doing:
- Physiological Responses to Exercise - not just any sort of physiology. You’ll tackle extreme environments like heat (thermoregulation) and high altitude.
- Strength and Conditioning - you’ll apply your knowledge of physical conditioning to support your athlete with the very best methods.
- Qualitative Biomechanical Analysis - you'll work out how to improve your performer’s technique through detailed analysis techniques leading to skill improvements.
- Psychological Skills Training in Sport - you’ll discover how to make sure your athlete’s mind is ready for action, including theories of arousal, imagery and self talk.
- Exercise for Pre and Post Natal Clients - unlike other HN Sport students, you’ll find out how to safely prescribe exercise to new and expectant mums.
- You’ll also look at measuring fitness using complex techniques and calculations, and how the human body learns new skills in sport and exercise.
Careers and Further Study
When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:
- Moving onto degree level study at university. There are excellent progression opportunities into 3rd year of a degree course such as BSc Sport Science. There are also routes towards Physiotherapy degrees, but entry is at the discretion of the chosen university.
- Seeking to start your career. On completion of your HND you will be ideally placed to move directly into industry employment thanks to REPS (Register of Exercise Professionals) accreditation. Possible roles include Fitness Testing Support, Athlete Support, Active Schools Co-ordinator, Sport/Health Promotion Roles, Gym Instructor, Gym/Fitness Suite Management or Primary/Secondary Teaching (following progression to degree and post graduate study).
