Overview

This course gives you a great introduction to hairdressing, developing your creative and practical skills and technical knowledge. You'll train in one of our on-campus commercial training salons, working with real clients, as you learn to cut, colour and style. Due to hairdressing being such a fast-changing industry, our aim is always to ensure that your course develops the current skills and knowledge required for positive progression, therefore some of what you study on the course may change.

Entry Requirements

To apply for this course, you'll need:

  • a genuine interest in hairdressing
  • four National 4s or equivalent OR a relevant NC course at SCQF Level 4 or equivalent
  • complete all sections of the application, including the personal statement

If you dont have formal qualifications but have life experience, then well also consider you for a place, so please do apply.

Course Content

Here's just some of what you may study:

  • you'll develop and build on skills in shampooing, blow-drying, styling and setting techniques
  • you'll develop and build on skills in colouring and lightening hair as you'll learn about colour products, how to mix and prepare products, apply evenly and remove
  • you'll develop and build on any existing skills to creatively style and curl the hair incorporating long hair work
  • you'll be introduced to cutting where you will learn how to use scissors correctly to carry out a variety of cuts using various cutting techniques
  • depending on previous experience you'll commence or continue to develop skills in general salon duties and have the opportunity to assist in higher level salon classes

You'll also have the chance to develop your skills and creativity through:

  • taking part in competitions
  • volunteering for community projects such as fashion shows or drama productions
  • Organising fundraising events for charity, offering services such as pleats, curling and more
  • hearing from industry experts, including local salon owners and suppliers
  • taking part in industry training days
  • you'll build transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving

Careers and Further Study

Once you successfully complete this course, you may consider these options:

  • progressing to Level 6 Hairdressing
  • exploring various career paths, such as becoming a Salon/Session/Self-employed Stylist, Colour Technician, Hair Stylist aboard a Cruise Ship, Hair Stylist in TV/Film/Theatre, or a Hairdressing Trainer/Educator
