    National 5 Applications of Mathematics

  • SCQF Level

    Level 5

  • Attendance/Duration

This course runs on a Tuesday evening at Kilwinning and Thursday evening at Ayr and Kilmarnock from 6pm - 9pm for 32 weeks. These times include a period for shut down procedures at the end of the night.

Entry Requirements

It is recommended that students have a pass at either National 4, or Intermediate 1 grade A or Standard Grade General mathematics. Students without any formal qualifications, but with life experience and a demonstrable interest in the subject area will also be considered for entry.

In June, you will receive a short mathematics revision booklet to work through over the summer. This is to ensure that students are prepared for the course and to refresh areas of mathematics that may not have been used recently.

Please note that due to the high level of challenge presented by National Courses, the above represents the minimum entry requirements.

What's Involved

It is a fast paced course and is delivered on a weekly basis in three hour classes, but will also require some home study.

This unit seeks to extend the mathematical skills learned at General level of Standard Grade, National 4 or Intermediate 1, and is broken into three units:

  • Managing Finance and Statistics
    • Analysing Budgets and Income
    • Determining the Best Deal and the impact of Interest rates
    • Using Statistics
  • Geometry and Measures
    • Using Formulae
    • Scale Drawings, Bearings and Navigation
    • Planning tasks, packing and time management
    • Two and three dimensional shapes
  • Numeracy
    • Rounding, Scientific Notation and Significant Figures
    • Interpreting scales and graphs
    • Probability

This is an entry qualification for many courses including Primary Educations and involves an external SQA examination at the end of the course, normally in May, subject to confirmation from the SQA. This course is excellent preparation for studying the new Applications of Mathematics at Higher level.
