If you’d like to work as a professional site carpenter, this is the ideal course for you. Skilled tradesmen usually find themselves in high demand - from both homeowners and industry - so if you invest in your abilities now, you could have a great future ahead!

For entry to this course you’ll need:

  • A real interest in working in carpentry
  • Completion of a pre-apprenticeship in Carpentry & Joinery at SCQF Level 5
  • An interview with us
  • Possibly an additional skills test

What's involved

This course will really get you work-ready, giving you the skills and knowledge you need for an apprenticeship in site carpentry. By now, you’ll already be pretty good, but you’re going to get even better, learning highly skilled techniques.

You’ll develop the full range of skills needed for constructing a house or commercial building from top to bottom, and everything else in between.

You’ll learn about different types of roofing structures and how to construct a traditional ‘cut’ roof, including openings such as dormer windows.

You’ll learn how to lay floor joists, create hatches and fix different joist coverings.

You’ll develop skills in fixing and fitting stairs, mouldings like skirtings and picture rails, encasements such as bath panels, and kitchen units and worktops.

You’ll also learn to install all types of doors – including singles, doubles, garage, French or sliding.

On the theory side, you’ll explore how to organise, plan and price jobs. You’ll look at different types of drawn information (including CAD), energy efficiency, estimating quantities, and health and safety in construction.

You’ll also have the chance to:

  • Put your new skills into action, with a real craft project in the local community. Previous projects include building playhouses and timber mazes in playgrounds and renovating the Swan Pond Café at Culzean Country Park. Whatever the project, we’ll make sure employers get to see your project and the new skills you’ve now got.
  • Go on placements/work experience with local employers such as a joinery firm, builder or double glazing company.
