Overview

If you want to become an Electrician or get into an electrical engineering or wind turbine technician role and find yourself without the necessary qualifications for getting a foot on the ladder then this course is the one for you.

Scotland has a world-renowned reputation for engineering and is at the cutting-edge of engineering developments. Engineers design, create, test and improve all sorts of products and processes. Due to the surge in renewable energy and the already diverse number of electrical engineering roles, this has led to increased demand for skilled people in the job market.

Entry Requirements

  • Three National 4s, or equivalent, in Maths, English, and a Technology or Science-based subject.
  • Industrial experience and/or other qualifications will also be considered
  • For a place on the course, you will be required to attend an interview.

This is a one-year full-time course with attendance of 3 days a week in College.

Course Content

The course focuses on practical skills, as well as the underpinning theoretical knowledge which is essential for progression to further studies. Topics covered include:

  • develop skills in domestic electrical wiring, and practical use of testing instruments.
  • learn how electricity is supplied to the home, and within the home and how electricity should be used safely and efficiently.
  • develop knowledge, understanding and skills in electrical principles, electrical systems and electrical testing and measurement.
  • explore the principles of operation, and applications relating to motors and generators.
  • learn safe working practices in the working environment, specific to the electrical and electronic industries.
  • explore a variety and range of industries exist within the energy sector, with emphasis in renewable electricity generation.

There are also units in developing core skills of literacy, maths and ICT, to prepare you for employment or progression to higher courses.

Next Steps and Career Opportunities

This course is seen as an important part of our pre-apprenticeship pathway.

It allows for progression onto:

  • NC Electrical Engineering Level 6,
  • WInd Turbine Systems or,
  • an apprenticeship in electrical or the renewables sector.
