Overview
If you want to become an Electrician or get into an electrical engineering or wind turbine technician role and find yourself without the necessary qualifications for getting a foot on the ladder then this course is the one for you.
Scotland has a world-renowned reputation for engineering and is at the cutting-edge of engineering developments. Engineers design, create, test and improve all sorts of products and processes. Due to the surge in renewable energy this has led to increased demand for multi-skilled people in the job market.
This is a one year full-time course with attendance of 3 days a week in College.
Entry Requirements
Entry requirements:
- Three National 4s, or equivalent, in Maths, English, and a Technology or Science-based subject.
- Industrial experience and/or other qualifications will also be considered
For a place on the course, you will be required to attend an interview and complete an aptitude test.
Applicants whose first language is not English should have a Level 4 or equivalent ESOL qualification to be considered for this course.
Course Content
The course focuses on practical skills, as well as the underpinning theoretical knowledge which is essential for moving up through the levels. Topics covered include:
- Electrical Wiring Skills
- Electrical Principles
- Fundamental Electrical Systems
- Electrical Testing and Measurement
- Rotating Electrical Machines
- Safe Working Practices
- Electricity in the Home
- Fundamental Electronics
- Domestic Wind Systems
- Conventional Energy Generation and the Grid
- Introduction to Energy Systems
- There are also units in developing core skills of literacy, maths and ICT, to prepare you for employment or progression to higher courses.
You will be assessed throughout each unit. You will need to achieve all units to successfully complete the course.
Successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a NC in Electrical Engineering Level 5.
Careers and Further Study
This course is seen as an important part of our pre-apprenticeship pathway. It allows for progression onto our Pre-apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering Level 6, Wind Turbine Systems or into an apprenticeship in electrical or the renewables sector.
