Overview
This course offers you an introduction into the world of Social Sciences, Law, and Criminology. You will cover various social science subjects such as Criminology and Psychology as well as looking at its application to the Law and law enforcement. This offers an insight into the varied aspects of the legal sector and the many career options available including developing the skills and experience required for applications to the police.
Entry Requirements
To apply for this course, you'll need:
- Four National 5s
- Must be eligible for the PVG scheme
If you don't have formal qualifications but have life experience, then we'll also consider you for a place, so please do apply. It is also desirable for you to have some community experience, either work experience or voluntary work with the community.
Course Content
Here's some of what you may learn:
- Criminology: Understand the 'why' behind the crime.
- social issues: Get to grips with what's affecting our communities and explore elements of equality and diversity.
- psychology: Develop an understanding of the human mind and they ways we study it to better understand behaviour.
- communication: Learn how to negotiate and defuse situations.
- ICT: Master the tech you'll need on the job.
- personal fitness: maintain a level of fitness and why personal fitness is important, to aid entry examination
Careers and Further Study
When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:
- Moving onto another level 6 programme in Social Science or Social Science with Police Studies, or an HNC course such as HNC Social Sciences.
- Exploring your future career options in a wide range of disciplines and sectors. With additional qualifications in social sciences, possible careers options include education, campaigning, research, the media, social work, the Police Service, voluntary sector, health and social care.
Skills
You'll build transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving.
Finally, you'll develop your skills in understanding, analysing, evaluating and using complex, formal English in a range of written and spoken forms.

Throughout the course you will meet with guest speakers from universities, various companies and third sector organisations as well as ex-students who have studied the course and gone on to further study. Some the organisations we work with include Thriving Communities, Police Scotland, Dundonald Castle, Kilwinning Heritage, and East, North, and South Ayrshire Councils.
