Ayrshire College hosts ‘Creating Engineers’ Regional Challenge
School pupils from across Ayrshire took part in an engineering challenge, organised by Glasgow Science Festival, hosted at Ayrshire College’s Kilmarnock campus.
The ‘Creating Engineers’ Regional Challenge Semi-Final gave Primary 5 and Primary 6 pupils the opportunity to demonstrate their creative design and build skills by solving engineering challenges using the construction set K-Nex.
The aim of the challenge was to provide primary school children with an introduction to the exciting world of mechanical engineering and technology in a fun and educational way.
Pupils from sixteen schools across Ayrshire competed to get to the next stage to be in with a chance of becoming the ‘Creating Engineers Champions 2019.’
The overall winners were announced as Greenmill Primary School, with runners up, Skelmorlie, Troon and Alloway Primary Schools, joining them at the West of Scotland Grand Finale which will take place in June at the University of Glasgow.
Alan Brown MP showed his support at the event. Alan said “Great to see the future engineers taking part in their engineering challenge. The judges had a difficult job on their hands. Well done to schools taking part, the STEM ambassador volunteers and as always, the fantastic venue of Kilmarnock Campus”.
One of the judges for the day, Motor Vehicle Curriculum Manager at Ayrshire College, David Lancaster said “It was encouraging to see teams of primary school children engaged in a competition to design and build a model within the time constraint of one hour. The children displayed talents in the planning, design, creation and operation of the artefact and were thoroughly engaged throughout.
I was honoured to be asked to be a judge for this event and it was a pleasure to be part of such a worthwhile competition.”
