Ayrshire College students hear from dementia experts

Health and Social Care students at Ayrshire College have been gaining a greater understanding of dementia, at a conference held at the College’s Kilmarnock Campus.

Alzheimer Scotland organised the health seminar for the students on 6 June - during Dementia Awareness Week (3-9 June).

The students heard from a range of experts throughout the morning event on dementia strategy, care, and research.

The ‘Meet the Experts’ event speakers were:

  • Michelle Miller – Healthcare Improvement Scotland - Dementia Strategy and Specialist Dementia Units
  • Joyce Gray – Development Director, Alzheimer Scotland – Technology, Dementia Care and Housing Policy
  • Susan Holland – Dementia Nurse Consultant – Ayrshire & Arran – The role of Dementia Champions in the Acute Sector
  • Barbara Sharp – Policy & Research, Alzheimer Scotland – Current Policy Perspectives and Research

The speakers spoke about the latest advances in dementia research, brain health, prevention, and the innovative supports now being used to care for people living with dementia.

Chris Hutchison, Head of Learning and Skills for Health and Social Care at Ayrshire College, said “It was an excellent event that both students and staff enjoyed. Listening to the experts helped refresh their existing knowledge and gave insights into the latest advancements and treatments.”

Jim Baird, Locality Leader at Alzheimer Scotland, said “We were thrilled to continue our strong partnership with the College by putting together a really formidable line-up of experts to share their knowledge with the health and social care students, and equally delighted to see such a full lecture hall.

“The questions from the floor at the end were interesting and insightful and we hope to make this a regular fixture in the calendar.”
