Ayrshire College turns up the H.E.A.T. on Tourism

Over 50 school pupils from across Ayrshire took part in an event organised as part a campaign to highlight careers in the ever-expanding Hospitality, Events and Tourism (H.E.A.T.) industry at the Ayr Campus of Ayrshire College recently.

In partnership with the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, Secondary 4 and 5 pupils from Ardrossan Academy, Belmont Academy, Queen Margaret Academy and St Matthews Academy took part in a team challenge, with each team allocated a country to represent and promote. The teams focused on combining elements of hospitality, events and tourism finishing with a presentation.

The aim of the team challenge was to not only promote the popularity of each team’s country as a holiday destination, but to promote that people who work in tourism also have a crucial part to play, ensuring that visitors have a fantastic experience and go home to spread the word.

After much deliberation by the judges, the winner of the H.E.A.T event was announced as team Thailand.

College Hospitality students provided a taster of food from various countries afterwards in Westerly, the College training restaurant.

One of the pupils who is studying tourism at school said “today has been really helpful. It’s been good to work on a project where we looked at the way all the different ways to promote a tourist destination. It’s made me want to travel even more now!”

About the success of the day, Hospitality Curriculum Manager, Sally Kennedy said “we were delighted with the number of students who came along and participated in the activities. The feedback we received has been overwhelmingly positive with the request that we enhance the new links and extend the visit to a full day. We aim to host another similar event in November. Thank you to the Chamber of Commerce, our marketing team and all schools who helped the H.E.A.T. team stage this event.”

Hospitality, Events and Tourism courses are open for application now.
