Mental Health and Wellbeing Champions at Ayrshire College

Mental Health and Wellbeing Champions at Ayrshire College

A group of kind-hearted students at Ayrshire College have signed up to become Mental Health and Wellbeing Champions.

The champions will be able to help students who require support, or signpost them to internal and external service providers regarding a range of issues.

Ayrshire College is piloting the Mental Health and Wellbeing peer support programme at its Kilmarnock Campus after East Ayrshire Council offered peer support training to the college. The initiative is also being rolled out in East Ayrshire secondary schools.

Wearing bright yellow jumpers with ‘Mental Health and Wellbeing Champion’ emblazoned on the back to ensure they are easily identifiable, the champions got to work on Wednesday 18 December by handing out holiday bags containing goodies such as toiletries and colouring books. They also provided information on where students can access support locally during the college’s festive break – information that is also available online for all students.

Ayrshire College’s reception and student services desks will be able to put students in contact with any of the champions if they’d like to have a chat, from January 2020.

Charlotte Mitchell, Ayrshire College Student Association Advisor, said: “The Student Association are delighted to be part of this project as it will add value to the wide range of support already available to students within the college. It provides a personal touch and who better to help students access the support they need than other students who understand or have experience of similar issues.”
