Police Studies students' event for 16 Days of Action

Students at Ayrshire College held a successful ‘Against Domestic Abuse’ event at the Kilmarnock Campus on 25 November.

HNC Police Studies students raised over £420 for East Ayrshire Women’s Aid, but perhaps more importantly they raised awareness of the 16 days of action campaign.

16 Days of Action Against Domestic Violence is an international campaign that runs from 25 November (UN International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women) to 10 December (Human Rights Day). The campaign calls for the elimination of all forms of gender-based violence.

Brian Whittle MSP also attended to show support for the event and presented prizes for the Sports Day. He took part in the cycle challenge on the day to help raise money for East Ayrshire Women’s Aid.

The students set up information stalls, organised a multi-sport tournament, and held a raffle, bake sale and quiz.

They also used their event to encourage students and staff at the college to donate toys for children this Christmas.

David Dougan, lecturer at Ayrshire College, said: “The students worked tirelessly for 10 weeks in order to deliver this amazing event. It not only helps them pass their course, it gives them real life experience of working with several college partners. The end result on the day was fantastic as it raised awareness for a great cause.”

Kieran Newlands from HNC Police Studies who was an Event Leader said: “After several hours of planning our event, it was a huge success thanks to the contribution of students, lecturers and outside organisations like East Ayrshire Women’s Aid and Police Scotland. The experience gained will help greatly in my ambition to become a Police Officer.”
