Scottish Young Engineer of the Year 2019 competition held at Ayrshire College

The annual IRTE Scottish Young Engineer of the Year competition has been held at Ayrshire College's Kilmarnock Campus.

Six finalists from Ayrshire College, Fife College and GTG Training took part in the contest this year - Amy Connor, Mark McAdams, Damien King, Liam Madden, Rebecca Porter and Michael Alam.

The finalists were given eight tasks to complete, covering a variety of subjects typically associated with motor vehicle repair and maintenance.

The judges and adjudicators were looking for a good methodical approach to each task, the correct repair or inspection process, and a good written summary of their results and observations. Marks were also given for good workshop practice and safe working procedures at all times.

The standard this year was very high, and all finalists scored well, with a small margin separating the eventual winners. The contestants enjoyed the day, and it was encouraging to see the enthusiasm and attention to detail present throughout the day.

The eventual winner was Liam Madden, with second place going to Damien King and Mark McAdams a very close third. The 3 winners received vouchers towards workshop equipment, generously given by one of the event sponsors.

The winner will receive his award at the Transport News Breakfast Awards later this year.
