Social Science students’ food bank donation

Ayrshire College students have collected and dropped off an incredible amount of food for St. Matthew’s Foodbank this Christmas.

As part of an ongoing Social Science department project, classes are regularly tasked with gathering food and toiletries to donate to the food bank.

This year’s students have exceeded all expectations for the festive drop-off, generously contributing the biggest donation the department has ever seen at this time of year. A ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ organised by student Suzanne Brown helped to bring in plenty of donations.

Students dropped the bags off to overwhelmed food bank volunteers at St. Matthew’s Church on Tuesday 17 December.

Una Connell, Social Science lecturer at Ayrshire College, said: “For a number of years now, our students have contributed to the food bank every few weeks. But this was a bigger event to try help at the busiest time of year.

“I am totally blown away with how our students have done. It’s a huge team effort and the students are so chuffed with their achievement – deservedly so. Everyone’s enthusiasm has been heart-warming, I’m bursting with pride.

“There was a support worker at St. Matthew’s who was collecting food for someone she cared for, and she was quite tearful and saying how our contributions were going to make such a difference to those in need.

“Well done to our Social Science students for all of their hard work. Special mention to Suzanne, Caroline McIntyre and Leanne To, who have all been such huge driving forces for this project.”
