Students support their local foodbank

Students support their local foodbank Ayrshire College students have helped support a local foodbank by raising awareness and encouraging students and staff to donate food.

As part of their collaborative core skills project, SWAP Social Science students invited all students and staff within the Ayr Campus to be part of their #OneStudentOneTin campaign to support South Ayrshire Foodbank.

South Ayrshire Foodbank provides nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to them in crisis.

The students put their core skills to the test at a student-led conversation café to challenge poverty in South Ayrshire, and since many people depend on the foodbank, it was agreed to help this worthy cause.

The students’ aim was for students and staff to donate just one tin of food to help the Foodbank provide 3 meals, for three days for one person over the winter, and particularly over the festive season.

The food was collected on 10 December 2019 at The Winter Wonderland Event at Ayrshire College’s Ayr campus by South Ayrshire Foodbank.

Essential Skills Lecturer, Fiona Murray said “the response to the #OneStudentOneTin campaign has been overwhelming! We have received a tremendous amount of food for the Foodbank.

“The event was a huge success and this is down to the students’ enthusiasm and genuine wish to make a difference. As a bonus, the project has meant that the students involved have increased their skills in team working and communications as well as their confidence, all while contributing to a local good cause.”
