Ayrshire College Sport Students are #passingpositivity

Following the success of last year’s award-winning mental health awareness day #passingpositivity, HND Coaching and Developing Sports students have organised another high-profile event, to take place in April 2020.

#passingpositivity garnered celebrity support on social media from the likes of Outlander actor Steven Cree, sports broadcasters Hayley McQueen and Jim White, and the late wrestler Adrian ‘Lionheart’ McCallum.

This year will be no exception, with the sports students organising big names to attend the all-day event, aimed at raising awareness of the benefits that physical activity can have on a person’s mental health. All proceeds raised will be donated to the Kris Boyd Charity, which raises awareness of mental health.

As well as a football tournament, there will be fitness challenges, multi-sport activities in the Games Hall, hair and beauty treatments, and information stalls in the College’s reception area. The students are encouraging people to get involved by using the hashtag #passingpositivity.

Alan Johnston, Sport & Fitness lecturer at Ayrshire College, said “The #passingpositivity campaign this year is a great opportunity to build on the success of last year’s event and the impact that it had on the College and local community.

“Mental health has had stigma attached to it and what we are trying to do is get the message out there that “it’s okay not to be okay” and that there are support networks out there. Through this event we want to encourage each other to talk and improve social networks through interacting with others, whether that be in a sports environment, classroom or workspace, and reduce the pressures of mental stressors.”

Carole Wilson, HND Coaching and Developing Sport student, said "I am thrilled to take part in such an inspiring football event, to help promote much needed support and positivity, to all who struggle with mental health obstacles. If I can help one individual just by being there and listening and talking to them, this would be a great achievement and means the event is achieving what it set out to do. The funds we raise to support the Kris Boyd Charity will help many people.”

Kris Boyd, The Kris Boyd Charity, said “The College and the Charity has worked hard to create a campaign that is now starting to make a difference, and we want everyone to come on board and be part of it.

“Where we were last year to where we are now, is night and day. We are going on to bigger and better things and we are not going to stop as we know we are making a big difference to a lot of people.”
