Students experience latest wind turbine technology
Ayrshire College Wind Turbine students attended a renewable energy seminar at the Scottish Power test facility based in Renfrew recently.
In partnership with Scottish Power Renewable Energy, students experienced industry-related challenges while gaining invaluable expertise on a live wind-farm. As well as this, they listened to in-depth lectures and enjoyed a specially organised tour of the very latest Megawatt offshore and onshore wind turbine generators and materials which are in situ at the test facility.
Construction, Technology and Trades Lecturer, Paul Harland said “Our industry partnership with Scottish Power Renewables meant that our students have had the opportunity to see a facility of huge scale and advanced engineering. These generators are the future of the industry, especially off-shore due to their efficient construction and operation and are capable of generating 2,300,000 watts and 1,200,000 watts of energy per unit. Now that is a lot of light bulbs!”
The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and found the visit very educational and relevant towards their own chances of gaining employment within the sector.
Student Allan Brown said “The sheer size of these units is breath-taking and to get the opportunity to tour the facility as well was fantastic. It has shown me just how vast the industry actually is.”
Student Chloe Shaw commented “The real life scenario of working with fully functional wind turbine systems is an excellent opportunity for us.
“Seeing the actual generation of energy and transmission over the electrical grid, brings all our studies throughout the year into focus and genuinely prepares us for industry.”
