February walking challenge for college staff
Ayrshire College staff are competing against each other in a workplace walking challenge throughout the month of February.
The competition has been organised by HND Fitness students as part of their annual #PassingPositivity event, with staff members forming teams and walking as far as possible this month.
#PassingPositivity is a mental health awareness campaign at Ayrshire College, highlighting the benefits that exercise can have on your mental health and wellbeing.
Each week the teams will be kept up to date with the current guidelines around exercise, to ensure all walks comply with current COVID restrictions. Each team will also have a student team leader assigned to them who will provide motivational content and support throughout the challenge.
Prizes are on offer to the team that records the highest km walked per team member.
Stephen Leckey, Sport & Fitness lecturer at Ayrshire College, said: “This challenge is part of our #PassingPositivity campaign and is great preparation for our Kilt Walk later in the year!
“It has been, and still is, a really challenging time for us all at the moment. Even finding time to stay active has been difficult, but it is important that we continue to engage in physical activity to ensure our sustained positive mental and physical health.”
Lisa Little, Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor at Ayrshire College, who has entered a team, said: "As well as it being a team challenge, it is also a personal challenge. Some people will pound the streets to get the steps up but for someone else the challenge may be to walk to the end of the street; both of which are awesome.
“It’s great to be able to take part in the walking challenge, as walking is great for the mind and body. It's great to get out for fresh air, exercise and enjoy what our local areas have on offer.”
