New Mental Health Liaison Officer at Ayrshire College

New Mental Health Liaison Officer at Ayrshire College

Ayrshire College has appointed a new Mental Health Liaison Officer, a partnership post created and funded between Ayrshire College and the Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnerships.

Michelle Morton joins the College after working at HM Prison Kilmarnock and with prior experience of working in nursing homes.

Michelle will provide mental health support across all campuses and improve the knowledge of mental health issues in staff and students.

Initially working from home, Michelle will eventually be based across all three main campuses of the College once staff are given the go ahead to return to campus.

Michelle is the third Mental Health Liaison Officer to be appointed at Ayrshire College, and replaces Hugh Dykes in the role. She will work with Ayrshire College until mid-2023.

Michelle said: “I am looking forward to moving forward with the role, and despite the challenges of having to deliver workshops, support and guidance digitally across all three campuses, I will look to provide as much support to college staff as I can within the restrictions that we are bound by now. When the campuses move forward into some form of normality, I will look forward to meeting with everyone in person and getting a feel for the buzz of student life.

“It has been an incredibly difficult time for society, us as individuals and not forgetting our student population, who have had to very quickly adapt to a new way of blended or remote learning. This is on top of the more common difficulties students may experience whilst studying, and this will continue to be a main priority for myself in the coming months.

“I have started preparations for Mental Health Awareness Week in May, and I look forward to helping students and providing guidance in any way I can.”
