Ayrshire College hosts Care Experienced Week event

Ayrshire College organised another successful event for Care Experienced Week in partnership with the South Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership last month.

The annual event delivered at Ayrshire College brought together young people in the community who are care experienced. They were invited to the Ayr Campus on 24 October to celebrate their achievements, engage with support available, and introduce them to the college environment.

The likes of Barnardo’s, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Skills Development Scotland, Who Cares Scotland and Young Scot were all stallholders at the event.

The Student Experience team at Ayrshire College gathered feedback at the end of the event, which was attended by 82 care experienced young people and 50 adults. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive – with many commenting that they enjoyed being able to access a wide range of information and engage with their peers on the night.

John Frew, Student Experience Team Leader at Ayrshire College, said: “The annual Care Experienced event was another huge success. It was great to see our partner organisations there, and all the young people having such a fantastic time interacting with our external partners and Ayrshire College staff.”

Dawn Parker, Corporate Parenting Lead Officer at South Ayrshire Council, said: “It was great to see so many young people choosing to take part. All young people should be supported to know they can achieve great things and that education is a route to realising their ambitions.”

Claire Flanagan, Young Carers Strategy Lead Officer at South Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “I am delighted that young carers have been included for the second year running. It is such a valuable experience for them – experiencing what the college has to offer, engaging with other stakeholders, and meeting new friends. Feedback from young carers has been really positive and they are already looking forward to next year!”
