Royal Aeronautical Society pays flying visit to Ayrshire College

Ayrshire College recently welcomed representatives of the Royal Aeronautical Society to its Ayr Campus.

The President of the Royal Aeronautical Society, Air Commodore Peter Round, was given a tour of Ayrshire College’s bespoke Aeronautical Engineering Training Centre, ahead of a Royal Aeronautical Society dinner held at the College’s Westerly training restaurant.

During his visit to the purpose-built Aeronautical Engineering Training Centre, the President of the Royal Aeronautical Society spoke with a number of current students on aeronautical related courses at Ayrshire College, from Performing Engineering Operations to HND level.

The Royal Aeronautical Society is the world's only professional membership association dedicated to the aerospace and aviation industry. Members of the Society from the Prestwick branch and beyond visited Ayrshire College for a dinner and lecture delivered by former director of flight operations at Rolls-Royce, Phill O’Dell.

Phill spent 18 years in the Royal Air Force where he flew the Buccaneer, was a weapons and flying instructor on the Hawk, and flew operational sorties over various parts of the world in the Jaguar. His ‘Spirit of Innovation’ lecture focused on the aircraft electrification technology that will be offered by Rolls-Royce in the future.

Gavin Murray, Assistant Principal of Curriculum at Ayrshire College, said: “It was a real pleasure to welcome Air Commodore Peter Round and members of the Prestwick Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society to our Aeronautical Engineering Training Centre in Ayr.  The group were very impressed by our facilities and qualifications offered, as well as commenting on the genuine enthusiasm of the staff and the students they met.”

Rod Winhall, Committee Member of the Prestwick branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society, said: “This event took place to mark the 90th anniversary of the first flight over Mount Everest, undertaken by David McIntyre. I would like to thank Ayrshire College for the hospitality – we like to support the students and the training restaurant, and it was great for us to have an extensive look around the Aeronautical Engineering Training Centre.”

Ayrshire College is running a brand-new full-time course from August 2023 called Introduction to Space Technology for those interested in a career in space.
