Spectacular Scottish women drop into Ayrshire College with new book

Two Ayrshire heroes who are featured in a new book, Spectacular Scottish Women, dropped into Ayrshire College’s Kilmarnock Campus to present the book to the College’s Learning Resource Centre (LRC).

Kayleigh Haggo, a former HNC Coaching and Developing Sport student at Ayrshire College who is a para-athlete with multiple world records, and Rose Reilly, who received an honorary degree from Ayrshire College in 2020 and is involved in Sport & Fitness projects at the College - including the Rose Reilly Football Centre - are celebrated in the book.

The Ayrshire College Student Association has purchased copies to be held in the LRCs of each campus at Ayrshire College, to inspire students and honour Kayleigh and Rose’s achievements.

Kayleigh Haggo was recently inducted into the College Development Network's College Hall of Fame. She has won a gold medal at the World Para Athletics Championships and three gold medals at the European Paralympic Youth Games, setting 13 world records and four national age group records in swimming, race running and club throw sports. She is now representing Boccia UK in her bid to reach the Paralympic Games.

Rose Reilly is a former Scottish footballer who has won the World Cup. Representing Italy in 1984, a year after being voted the world's best female footballer, Rose added the World Cup to a career trophy haul that included eight Serie A titles. A women’s football pioneer, Rose lends her name to the Rose Reilly Football sessions at Ayrshire College organised for girls in Ayrshire.

Linda Corbett, Student President of the Ayrshire College Student Association, said: “It’s not every day a former student is celebrated in a book, so we thought it would be fitting to recognise Kayleigh’s success by ordering Spectacular Scottish Women for our students to read through. It was brilliant to meet with Kayleigh and Rose, who has embraced the Sport and Fitness department’s Connecting Communities initiative and been an important presence for encouraging girls into sport over the years. Their stories are incredible, they are both well deserving of their place in this book and we’re thankful that they could join us at the College to celebrate.”
