I came to college to study Construction Management in order to enhance my knowledge of the construction industry. Which would ultimately allow me to pursue my dream job of becoming a Senior Construction Manager working for a major construction company.
My college experience was amazing, I enjoyed every moment. I was always motivated to turn up in the morning and try my best at every challenge I faced. My lecturers were always more than happy to help when I needed support.
I have gained many skills from my course, including using AutoCAD to produce construction details and site layouts, Microsoft Project to produce network flows and master programmes, and Microsoft Excel to produce construction methodologies. In addition, I’ve gained skills in report writing, presentation skills, and being able to work independently and within a group.
I was chosen to be part of a group to represent Ayrshire College at the Chartered Institute of Building in Scotland Student Challenge 2019, in which our group eventually went on to win and be rewarded with a week of work experience with Robertson Construction.
The work experience was located at the Joseph Black Building within the University of Glasgow campus, where Robertson and various subcontractors were installing new windows and completing a range of fabric repairs to the external of the building, as well as carrying out fire improvement works to the internal of the building.
Going on work experience was a huge benefit to me because it allowed me to see what a Construction Manager does on site and how they handle every challenge they face throughout their day.
My plans for the future are to keep working hard at university to attain my degree qualification. Then I’ll apply for graduate positions to get my start at a major construction company and work my way up the ladder in Construction Management.
