NPA Practical Science: What is it and who is it for?

June 12, 2018 - Martin Currie

We are running a brand new Science course starting in August. It’s called NPA Practical Science and, as it’s new for 2018/19, we thought it would be worth explaining.

What is NPA Practical Science?

This course is a great way to develop your knowledge of various science subjects and increase your confidence too.

It’s a part-time course, requiring a commitment of just 6 hours over two days, and is tailored to fit around a busy lifestyle.

So, for example, are you a parent who needs to drop the kids off at school every morning and pick them up in the afternoon? Not a problem – it’s a 10am start for NPA Practical Science.

What will I be doing?

The course covers the basics of each science area – biology, chemistry, physics, and even some forensic science.

Of course the clue is also in the name: there is a lot of practical work involved. Around 50% of the course is practical.

What can I do after this course?

There are plenty of options available to you after you earn the NPA Practical Science qualification. The two main courses that you would be able to progress to would be:

  • Access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (SWAP) – which is a full-time course structured around chemistry, physics and mathematics. This could lead to a college course such as HNC Mechanical Engineering, or a university course.
  • Access to Life Sciences (SWAP) – which can be studied on a part-time basis, covering chemistry, biology and mathematics. Again this can lead to university, or a further college course in HNC Applied Science.

Why should I enrol on this course?

If you’ve taken a break from education and are eager to return, this could be the perfect course for you. It’s a ‘taster’ science course, so it allows you to see if the subject, and the college life, is right for you.
