Meet Mica Gilmour and find out why she loved The HIVE courses at Ayrshire College.
One of our Kickstart Interns has been working with the marketing team to promote our HIVE courses. Abigael Richford caught up with Mica Gilmour to find out why she'd recommend a HIVE course.
What course do you study and why did you choose it?
The most recent course I did was the Prince’s Trust, I chose it because it gave me the chance to better myself, gain more confidence and get me back into the world of work. The Prince’s Trust gave me a lot of opportunities that I don’t think I would have gotten otherwise.
Was the course what you were expected?
It was what I expected and more. I met people that are now part of my life forever. It gave me confidence, opportunities and made me who I am, which is exactly what I was hoping for.
What does a typical day on the course involve?
A typical day in the course involves a daily check-in to see how we’re all doing. Depending on what stage of the course we’re at we could be on trips, doing workshops in college or team building exercises to build our confidence. It’s different stuff every day, which keeps the course interesting.
What do you love about your course?
I loved getting to finish the course in person this time, the last time I done the Prince’s Trust it was online due to COVID, so it was good to be back in college and to properly meet other people on the course.
How would you describe the HIVE courses?
I would describe the HIVE courses as a second chance. It gives you a confidence boost if you need it. I didn’t have the best start and got myself into a lot of trouble when I was younger, but then the HIVE came along and completely changed me. I wouldn’t be where I am now, on the journey I am, without it. I got the chance to work on myself and getting back to feeling like myself.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about starting this course?
The only advice I could give to someone starting any HIVE course would be to just do it. Don’t waste time thinking about it, just do it and enjoy it. I can guarantee you will be a different person after because I know how much it’s changed me.
What do you like about Ayrshire College?
What I like most about Ayrshire College is that it gives you a second chance. Even if you aren’t sure what you want to do, you get the opportunity to figure that out while studying. There’s such a wide range of courses within the college, not just the HIVE.
What is next for you?
As a student in the HIVE, I realised I loved youth work so that’s what I’ve been applying for. The HIVE definitely put me on this path and made me realise that this is my dream job.
