Welcome to the first IT blog

February 28, 2022 - Brad Johnstone | Head of ICT Services

The theme for the first few blogs is going to be on Cyber Security and hopefully giving you some insight into the techniques criminals use and how you can protect yourself against them.

As a college we have invested significant money and resource into protecting systems and the data that it stores. This is important as recent figures show that more than “85% of UK organisations experienced a successful attack in 2020/2021“. Thankfully we didn’t experience a successful attack in the college but with the volume of attempts we need to keep up our focus in all things cyber.

Monday 28th February will see the launch of this years Cyber Scotland Week. After attending multiple events at last year’s cyber week, I would highly recommend trying to attend anything that catches your eye.

Like most things developing your knowledge and skills in cyber will hopefully help you navigate safely in your digital world.

Next weeks blog will focus on passwords including tips on how to create and more importantly remember them. Writing them down on post it notes and leaving them near your IT equipment is not good practice.

The following week will talk about phishing, what it is, what to look out for and what to do if you think you have fallen for one.

The final week in this series of blogs will discuss password managers and multi factor authentication. Two tools that can greatly increase your ability to stay safe online.

Please connect with us on the official Ayrshire College social sites if you feel there is anything else you would like me to discuss in the blogs whether it be about cyber or other related IT topics.
