Overview

Make-up Artistry is a hugely exciting and diverse industry to work in. Professional Make-up Artists can go into have careers in Fashion, TV, Film and Theatre Production. If you've got passion, drive, creativity, a commitment to work hard, a high level of motivation and are a good team player who enjoys working with others, then Make-up Artistry is for you.

Entry Requirements

For entry to this course you need:

  • a real interest in all aspect of Make-up Artistry
  • four National 5s or equivalent, ideally including English and Art & Design or a relevant SCQF Level 5 course such as Arts & Crafts or NC Hairdressing or equivalent
  • to submit an application, completing all sections, including Personal Statement in full.
  • to show various samples of your artwork or photographic evidence of make-up. Please send this evidence for the Kilwinning Campus application direct to clare.mcleish@ayrshire.ac.uk, when you are submitting your course application.

We may notify you of the outcome by letter and/or invite you to attend an interview. If you don’t have formal qualifications, but have life experience, then we’ll also consider you for a place.

Course Content

This course offers a great introduction to Make-up Artistry, giving you the chance to unleash your creativity in hair and makeup. It’s fun, fascinating, and completely industry-led, developing both your practical skills and technical knowledge.

Due to the fast-changing nature of the Make-up Artistry industry, our aim is always to ensure that your course develops the current skills and knowledge required for positive progression. Therefore, some of what you study on the course may change.

Here’s just some of what you may study:

  • you’ll learn the basic principles of fashion and Instagram makeup and then research the latest trends and produce your own ‘looks’ on models.
  • you will learn bridal, evening, and editorial makeup techniques and then produce a finished look.
  • you’ll learn to shampoo, style, dress, and finish hair, which may include designing looks for long hair, current fashion trends, and creating total looks.
  • an introduction to making headdresses for the makeup industry.
  • you’ll take part in work experience within different venues to enhance your makeup and hair skills and start to network within your industry.
  • you’ll have the opportunity to compete in ‘in-house’ competitions, which could lead to competing in a national Make-up Artistry competition.

Careers and Further Study

When you successfully complete this course, you may progress to: HNC Make-Up Artistry. Exploring your future career options which could include: Retail Make-up/Hair Consultant with a high street cosmetic brand. Make-up/Hair Columnist/Blogger. Trainee Make-up Artist in Theatre, TV and Film.

Skills

You will develop the technical skills and the qualities essential for working in the make-up artistry industry. 

  • Ability to prepare and provide hair and make-up techniques safely and effectively
  • Provide hair, make-up services required for the make-up/fashion industry
  • Gain effective communication skills to enable you to work alongside various industry experts and provide make-up services.
  • Digital skills to help with the future make-up industry and every-day life.
  • You’ll build transferable skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work
