Skills for Work (SfW)

National Progression Awards (NPAs)
NPAs are designed to help learners develop knowledge, understanding, and practical skills in specific areas of vocational education, which focuses on preparing for careers in particular industries or professions.

National Certificate (NC)
A National Certificate (NC) is ideal for learners who may have no formal qualifications. These courses focus on developing practical skills for work and can also provide a pathway to higher-level programmes, such as a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND).

Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ)
SVQs are based on national standards and demonstrate that learners have the skills to perform their jobs effectively. These qualifications are studied in the workplace, at college, or with training providers.

Foundation Apprenticeships
Foundation Apprenticeships offer senior-phase secondary school pupils a valuable work-based learning opportunity. Typically starting in S5 and lasting 2 years, pupils split their time between school, college, and a local employer, completing the apprenticeship alongside their National 5s and Highers. For S6 pupils, 1-year Foundation Apprenticeships are available, delivered over 2 full days, combining college learning and workplace experience.
