Foundation Apprenticeships
What is a Foundation Apprenticeship?
Foundation Apprenticeships are innovative courses designed for S5 and S6 pupils, combining school studies, college learning, and real-world work experience. Many of these courses are spread over two years, although there are some options for one-year completion.
As you study for a Foundation Apprenticeship, you’ll split your time between college, and a work placement with an industry employer. This experience introduces you to the working world early on, helping you understand what employers expect.
For employers, Foundation Apprenticeships offer a unique opportunity to connect with and nurture motivated, skilled young people who could become valuable future employees.
Why were Foundation Apprenticeships created?
Foundation Apprenticeships were developed to give Scotland’s young people a head start in their careers by combining valuable work experience with classroom learning, all while still in school. Skills Development Scotland created these apprenticeships to help reduce youth unemployment by equipping students with the skills and experience they need to thrive after school.

What are my progression routes?
Completing a Foundation Apprenticeship is an excellent first step towards a Modern Apprenticeship, where you can earn while you learn on the job. Unlike Foundation Apprenticeships, Modern Apprenticeships are completed after you’ve left school. Additionally, a Foundation Apprenticeship can open doors to further education at college or university or lead directly to a job.
