Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework

  • SCQF Level 1–3

    Entry-level qualifications designed to develop foundational skills and knowledge, suitable for a wide range of learners.

  • SCQF Level 4

    SCQF Level 4 qualifications are equivalent to National 4 level in school. Completing a Level 4 course typically allows learners to progress to a Level 5 course.

  • SCQF Level 5

    SCQF Level 5 qualifications are equivalent to National 5 level in school. Completing a Level 5 course typically allows learners to progress to a Level 6 course.

  • SCQF Level 6

    SCQF Level 6 qualifications are equivalent to Higher level in school. Completing a Level 6 course typically allows learners to progress to a Level 7 course.

  • SCQF Level 7

    SCQF Level 7 qualifications, such as a Higher National Certificate (HNC), are equivalent to Advanced Higher level in school and the first year of university. Completing a Level 7 course allows progression to a Level 8 qualification (HND) or, depending on the course, direct entry into the second year of university.

  • SCQF Level 8

    SCQF Level 8 qualifications, such as a Higher National Diploma (HND), are equivalent to the second year of university. Completing a Level 8 course can lead to progression into further study at SCQF Level 9 (third year of university) or prepare learners for employment in their chosen field.
