Smoke free policy

Ayrshire College is dedicated to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students, staff, and visitors. In alignment with this commitment, all Ayrshire College campuses operate as smoke-free zones. This policy prohibits smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes and vaping, in all campus buildings, car parks, and college vehicles. Additionally, smoking in private vehicles while on college premises is not permitted.

Smoking Locations:

  • Off-Campus Smoking: If you wish to smoke, please ensure you are off campus.

  • Campus Boundaries: Maps indicating the boundaries of each campus can be provided by the Information Hub or viewed below to assist you in identifying the smoke-free areas.

Littering Policy:

  • Littering Offence: Dropping litter, including cigarette ends, is considered an offence and may result in an £80 fine issued by the Local Authority.

  • Disciplinary Actions: Individuals found smoking on campus are subject to the College’s disciplinary policy.

Support Services:

  • Quit Smoking Assistance: For those seeking support to quit smoking, please contact Quit Your Way at 0800 783 9132. You can also speak to Student Experience for help and advice. Speak to the Information Hub to set up an appointment.

Please respect our smoke-free policy and be considerate of others in the community. Thank you for your cooperation.

Staying Safe at Ayrshire College

First aid

Each of our campuses has trained first aid personnel available at all times. If you or someone else requires first aid, please notify the Information Hub immediately. A first aider will be contacted to assist you.

  • Stay Calm: It is important to remain calm and help the injured person do the same.

  • Emergency Assistance: If an ambulance is needed, please mention this when requesting First Aid. If an ambulance has already been called, inform the Information Hub immediately.

All accidents and incidents on campus must be reported. You can do so through your college host or directly at the Information Hub.

Fire Safety

Important Fire Safety Information

The College takes fire safety very seriously and has robust systems in place to ensure the well-being of everyone on campus. Fire alarms are tested every Wednesday at 11:00am across all campuses. During the test, the alarm will sound for approximately 10 seconds.

In the Event of a Fire Alarm

  1. Stop what you are doing.
  2. Evacuate the building promptly. Walk swiftly, but do not run, to the designated assembly point.
  3. Do not return for personal belongings.
  4. Do not re-enter the building until instructed by the Evacuation Controller.

If You Discover a Fire

  1. Do not attempt to extinguish the fire.
  2. Leave the room immediately.
  3. Close the door behind you to contain the fire.
  4. Activate the nearest Break Glass call point to initiate the building evacuation (the Estates Team will call the Fire Brigade).
  5. Evacuate the building and proceed to the designated assembly point.
  6. Inform the first staff member or Fire and Rescue personnel of the fire’s location and type.
  7. Do not return for personal belongings.
  8. Do not re-enter the building until the Evacuation Controller gives permission.

Emergency Evacuation Assistance

The purpose of a Generic Emergency Evacuation Plan (GEEP) is to ensure visitors to Ayrshire College, particularly those with restricted mobility or other accessibility needs, are familiar with the building layout, evacuation procedures, equipment, and communication devices. If you need additional support or information, please speak to your host, lecturer, or the Information Hub upon arrival.

Action Required on Hearing the Fire Alarm:

  • If able, leave the building immediately via the nearest accessible fire exit and proceed to the designated assembly point.

  • If you are unable to evacuate unaided, proceed to the nearest safe refuge area, typically located in stairwells. Use the emergency call point to contact the fire warden or security personnel.

  • Do not use lifts during an evacuation unless otherwise instructed.

  • Familiarise yourself with the floor layout, fire exits, and alarm signals upon your arrival.
