Ayrshire students win national Construction challenge

A team of Ayrshire College students have won the 2019 Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Annual Student Challenge.

The annual construction competition, held in Crieff and sponsored by Robertson Construction, is open to teams of students from Scotland’s colleges and universities.

HNC students Elizabeth Meikle, Jordan Gilbert, Kara Mackin and Neve Lawson made up the winning Ayrshire College team. Dundee & Angus College were runners-up and Heriot Watt University placed third.

The challenge required the teams to research a specified bespoke building project covering a range of tasks include planning, resourcing, financing, managing health & safety, building information modelling, and sustainability.

The teams then presented their findings to a panel of judges.

The winning Ayrshire College team will now have the opportunity to go on work experience with a main contractor.

Barry Kerr, Construction lecturer at Ayrshire College, said: “It was a great event for the students to showcase their skills alongside other colleges and universities. They worked well together to produce a really informative presentation in a short space of time and getting first place for their hard work.”
