Ayrshire College promotes aerospace ambitions at Scottish Parliament

Ayrshire College representatives were at the Scottish Parliament for the annual Colleges Scotland Parliamentary Reception, hosted by Michael Marra MSP.

Alastair Heron, Head of Aerospace and Russell Wilson, Head of Digital Learning Support at the College, were there with VR headsets that had been programmed with a simulated Ayrshire College branded aircraft in a hangar space.

The showcase event highlighted the fantastic work of colleges across the country.

Ayrshire College is a regional partner of the Ayrshire Growth Deal, which will position Ayrshire as one of the UK's leading centres of Aerospace and Space activity.

The College has close partnerships with major aerospace and now space employers in Ayrshire and beyond, ensuring they are meeting the current and future skills needs of the industry.

The College currently has over 100 aerospace modern apprentices studying at any one time in our Aeronautical Engineering Training Centre.

At the Parliamentary Reception, Alastair spoke about Ayrshire College’s aerospace ambitions for the next few years.

Alastair Heron, Head of Aerospace at Ayrshire College, said: “We’ve got big plans for the next few years, from becoming a Part 147 Approved Training organisation to running new Aerospace and Space courses from our purpose-built training centre. We are starting to develop our VR capability and through time we will be able to offer students and apprentices access to a VR platform where they can perform tasks in a safe manner - learning the skills required to complete the same tasks in a real-world environment.

“Our Performing Engineering Operations course is delivered by aviation industry experts and teaches our students the hand skills that are essential for a career in aerospace. Using innovation, we will continue to develop our curriculum and how teaching and learning takes place.”
