An inspiring act of kindness has taken place at Ayrshire College, as student John Law said goodbye to 10 years of hair growth, all in support of a very special charity.

John, an HNC Accounting student at Ayrshire College’s Kilmarnock Campus, has spent the past decade growing his hair with a clear purpose: to donate it to the Little Princess Trust. Inspired by his mum, who previously gave her own hair to the charity, John was determined to follow in her footsteps and make the same meaningful contribution.

The Little Princess Trust provides free, real-hair wigs to young people up to the age of 24 who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment or conditions such as alopecia. For John, this wasn’t just about growing his hair, it was about growing hope and confidence for someone who truly needs it.

After 10 years of patience and commitment, the time finally came for the big chop. Wanting to make the moment even more meaningful, John reached out to the College’s Hairdressing department to involve fellow students in the transformation.

Under professional guidance, our talented Level 5 Barbering students carefully cut and styled John’s hair, helping him transition from his long locks to a fresh new short back and sides. The experience provided invaluable hands-on learning, allowing students to take part in a real and rewarding moment that will make a difference to a young person’s life.

We are delighted to share that John was able to donate over 20 inches of hair to the charity. It takes 10 inches to make one wig, so this should be enough to make two.

Speaking about his decision, John said:

I’ve been growing my hair for 10 years with the aim of donating it, inspired by my mum who did the same. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and knowing it will help someone going through a difficult time makes it completely worthwhile. I’m really grateful to the hairdressing department for getting involved and giving me a great new style - it feels strange having it short again, but I’m proud to finally make the donation.

Angela Sheridan, Head of Learning & Skills – Creative, Hair, Beauty, Complementary Therapies & Make Up Artist at Ayrshire College, added:

We are incredibly proud of John for his commitment to such a meaningful cause. It was a fantastic opportunity for our barbering students to be involved in something so special, allowing them to gain practical experience while contributing to a life-changing charity.

John’s selfless gesture not only supports a life-changing cause but also reflects the strong sense of community within Ayrshire College - with students from different departments coming together to make a real difference.
