Ayrshire College Lecturer in Creative Industries, John McBlain, has received a Highly Commended Award at the 2026 Pearson National Teaching Awards in recognition of his innovative work using digital technology to inspire young learners.

John received the national recognition in the Transformational Use of Digital Technology category for the ongoing success of the Lochnorris Studios podcast series and the Write Record Produce Release course at Lochnorris Primary School. The nomination was submitted by the school's management team in recognition of the lasting impact the project has had on pupils.

The pioneering initiative gives primary school pupils hands-on experience of podcast production, developing skills in storytelling, communication, teamwork and digital media while giving them a platform to share stories that matter to their community.

The award adds to growing recognition for the project, which has engaged more than 150 pupils and established one of Scotland's first primary school podcast production programmes.

John said:

I'm incredibly honoured to receive this recognition. The real achievement belongs to the pupils at Lochnorris Primary School, whose creativity, enthusiasm and willingness to tell their stories continue to inspire me every day. This initiative gives young people from Cumnock the opportunity to embark on a unique and exciting podcast production project, helping them develop confidence, creativity and valuable digital skills while giving them a platform to share stories that matter to their community. It's been a privilege to work alongside the school and see the positive impact the project continues to have."

Angela Sheridan, Head of Learning & Skills for Creative, Hair, Make-up and Complementary Therapies at Ayrshire College, said:

John consistently demonstrates how innovation and creativity can transform learning experiences. His work with Lochnorris Primary School has not only inspired young people to develop valuable digital and communication skills but has also strengthened partnerships within our communities. This national recognition is thoroughly deserved, and we are proud to see John's commitment to inspiring learners recognised on such a prestigious stage.
