Ayrshire College Painting & Decorating students are putting their skills into practice to create a warmer, more welcoming environment for people accessing mental health and wellbeing support at Megan’s Space in Irvine.
As World Mental Health Day approaches on 10 October, students from the College’s Pre-App Level 5 Painting & Decorating course at Ayr Campus are giving the charity’s Ballot Road premises a fresh look. Their work includes painting the main office, boardroom, counselling rooms and kitchen.
Megan’s Space supports people across Ayrshire and surrounding areas, with a mission “to prevent the needless loss of young lives through suicide and self-harm, while promoting mental wellbeing.” The charity is forecast to support 1,490 clients during 2026/27, making welcoming, comfortable spaces an important part of its work.
Rachel Anderson, Centre Manager at Megan’s Space, said:
We really appreciate the work the students are doing for us. They’ve been professional, hardworking and a pleasure to have in the building, and it’s great to see them making such a difference to the space.
For the students, the project offers valuable experience of working in a live environment, helping them build confidence, develop their practical skills and see the difference their work can make.
Lindsay McLardy, Painting & Decorating Lecturer at Ayrshire College, said:
It’s great to see the students putting their skills into practice on a real project and making a difference in their local community.
Aston Smillie, a Painting & Decorating student at Ayrshire College, said:
It’s been good to get out and do something like this. We’ve enjoyed working together and giving something back to the community.
The project brings vocational learning into the community, supporting students’ development while helping Megan’s Space provide a welcoming setting for those who use its services.
As World Mental Health Day highlights the importance of mental wellbeing and access to support, the students’ contribution is a practical way to support a charity working with people across Ayrshire.
