Two first-year students from Ayrshire College’s Applied Sports Science HND course in Kilwinning have recently achieved notable results in national fitness competitions, demonstrating the practical application of their academic studies.
Jonathan Gray from Irvine, a strongman competitor, recently secured podium finishes at two prestigious events under the Official Strongman Games (OSG). Meanwhile Vanna Salutous, from Saltcoats, claimed first place in two categories at her first bodybuilding competition.
Jonathan’s strongman journey began with Scotland's Strongest Man (U90kg), held at Loreburn Hall in Dumfries, where he competed against 14 athletes. Jonathan demonstrated incredible strength and determination, placing 2nd overall, just one point shy of the top spot.
This impressive performance qualified him for Britain's Strongest Man (U90kg), held at Bolton University Arena as part of the Fit Expo. Competing against the best in Britain, Jonathan achieved 3rd place overall, cementing his reputation as one of the strongest under 90kg athletes in the country.
Jonathan is now preparing for Europe's Strongest Man (U90kg) this August.
He said: “Being part of these competitions is a massive privilege for me, and to podium I couldn't be prouder. My studying of sports science at Ayrshire College has massively improved my skills and mental preparation. Now I know I have better knowledge of how my body actually works.”
Vanna Salutous has also achieved extraordinary success in the world of natural bodybuilding. Competing in her first event with the FMC Federation at the Arena Centre in Stewarton, Vanna claimed 1st place in both the Women’s Bodybuilding and Transformation categories. Her dedication to rigorous training, strict nutrition and precise posing routines set her apart as an elite competitor.
Bodybuilding demands a holistic approach, from symmetry and muscle tone to stage presence and conditioning. With the guidance of two dedicated coaches, one for training and nutrition and another for posing, Vanna has demonstrated incredible resilience and focus. Her double gold medal victory reflects countless hours of preparation and discipline.
Vanna added: “Bodybuilding is mentally and physically demanding, but it’s deeply rewarding. Competing has taught me so much about perseverance and the importance of planning and precision. I’m grateful for the support I’ve received, and I’m looking forward to future competitions where I can continue to grow and inspire others.”
Jonathan and Vanna’s hard work serves as an inspiration to their peers at Ayrshire College, proving that with determination and the right support, exceptional achievements are within reach.
Paul Brodie, Curriculum Quality Manager for Sports & Fitness and Hospitality said: “Vanna and Johnathan have both worked hard this year to balance their physical training alongside fully engaging with their college course. It is great to see that this approach is bringing them such great success in their athletic disciplines, as well as their academic work. From our point of view, the fact they can apply what there are learning at college to better their wider endeavours is lovely to see.”
David Malcolm, Lecturer, Sports & Fitness and Hospitality added: “both individuals have demonstrated exceptional dedication and commitment to their college studies, fully engaging in their academic journey despite the challenges of balancing work and family responsibilities. Their ability to manage these competing commitments speaks volumes about their time management skills and determination. Furthermore, they have embraced the collegiate experience, actively participating in various aspects of college life, which has enriched their learning and personal development. As members of our sports science group, they have proven to be invaluable assets, contributing not only their academic insights but also fostering a collaborative and supportive environment for their peers. Their proactive approach to both their studies and extracurricular activities exemplifies the qualities we value in our academic community, and we look forward to their continued contributions to the group.”
