Ayrshire College is taking a whole-college approach to sustainability with the launch of its Sustainability Framework 2026–2029, setting out how sustainability will be embedded across learning and teaching, campus operations, partnerships and community engagement.
Built around social, economic and environmental sustainability, the Framework provides a clear structure for action, accountability and progress. It reflects the College’s commitment to supporting Scotland’s transition to net zero while preparing learners with the skills, knowledge and values they need for a changing world.
Sustainability is becoming part of everyday decisions, behaviours and outcomes across the College. This includes embedding sustainability within the curriculum, operations and decision-making, while supporting students and staff to develop the green skills and sustainable behaviours needed to thrive in a low-carbon economy.
Practical action will also help reduce the College’s environmental impact, from lowering carbon emissions and improving resource efficiency to developing campuses that are sustainable places to learn and work.
Partnerships will play an important role too. By working with employers, communities and other organisations, Ayrshire College can support a fair and inclusive transition to a greener economy and help ensure the benefits of that transition are shared across Ayrshire.
Progress will be measured, monitored and reported, helping the College demonstrate its impact and remain accountable for delivering on its commitments.
Sustainability is not just about what the College does as an organisation. It is a shared responsibility involving students, staff, partners and communities.
Through the Sustainability Framework, Ayrshire College is setting out a clear direction for creating lasting positive change – supporting a greener, more resilient Ayrshire while helping people develop the skills and opportunities they need for the future.
Barry Morton, Head of Facilities, said:
Our Sustainability Framework sets out a clear direction for how we will make sustainability part of everyday life at Ayrshire College. From the way we operate our campuses to the skills and knowledge we develop with our students, we all have a role to play.
We’ve already made progress, but this Framework gives us a shared focus for the next three years. By working together with our students, staff, partners and communities, we can reduce our environmental impact while supporting a greener, more sustainable future for Ayrshire.
