Alison Sutherland
Senior Independent Member and Non-Executive Board Member
Alison brings over 25 years of experience in education and public service, driven by a deep belief in the power of learning to transform lives. She began her career as an English teacher in 1999 after earning a degree in English Literature and Economic and Social History, followed by a postgraduate qualification in English Teaching at Jordanhill Teaching College.
In 2015, Alison completed a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership further strengthening her ability to lead effective, compassionate, future-focused educational practice. Her career has since included senior roles within public service such as Head Teacher of two secondary schools; Head of Children, Families and Justice Services in North Ayrshire Council; and Head of Support (seconded) for The Promise Scotland, where she contributed to the national mission of improving outcomes for care-experienced children and young people by consistently focusing on equity, inclusion and a belief that every learner, no matter their background, deserves the opportunity to thrive.
Inspired by Ayrshire College’s vision and values, and seeing first-hand the impactful work of the college as a Head Teacher in North Ayrshire, Alison remains deeply committed to equity, excellence, inclusion, and ensuring every learner is empowered to access opportunities for growth and success.
Today, as Executive Director of Children’s Services at Hartlepool Borough Council, she continues to champion education, leadership, and social justice for the benefit of children, young people, staff, and the wider community.
